Piranhas Weekly News - Week of 7/16
Dear Piranhas Families -
We have some fun news to share in our final newsletter of the season – our incredible Piranhas have grabbed the 2023 Division 9 Champion title! Our team fought hard and dug deep the entire season. Soon we’ll have another banner to add to our Division Champion victories!
But hey, the fun’s not over yet. We have one more week in the regular season with tomorrow’s B Meet, Divisionals on Saturday, and then we’ll celebrate big at our end of season team banquet on Sunday.
These newsletter sends have gotten later and later on Sunday, which is perhaps symbolic for how tired we all feel as we near the end of the season :) BUT we will finish strong and celebrate even harder. We look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday as we revel in our well-deserved victory and remember highlights from the season!
Parents, please check your email from a special message from the Great Piranha.
Here are notes for the week:
Our Last B Meet is at HOME Tomorrow
Arrive at 4:50 p.m. and let’s swim fast for the last B meet of the season! The theme is superheroes, so dust off your masks, capes, and superpowers. See Amanda Hungerford’s email for all the entry report and meet details.
This is also our Alumni Meet, so we’ll be welcoming back Piranhas from days gone by.
Josh’s Famous Pulled Pork
Come hungry to the B Meet because the Piranhas Grill will be serving up Josh’s Famous Pulled Pork for $5. Plus, they’ll have burgers, dogs, brats, and veggie burgers.
Action Needed! Divisionals Entries Due Monday
“Divisionals” is an official NVSL meet held at the end of the season where each team in our division sends the fastest two swimmers on their team in each age group/gender/event to compete. Times at Divisionals determine whether a swimmer advances to NVSL All Stars. There are no team points involved in this meet; it is an individual competition. See Karen Corbett’s email for more details on how this meet is seeded.
The Division Champion and Sportsmanship trophies are also presented at the Divisionals Meet.
Importantly, mark your availability and use the notes feature to indicate your swimmer’s preferred events. This is due by the close of Monday night’s B meet. Use a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being their preferred event. For example:
1 - Breast
2 - IM
3 - Back, etc
Practice Notes for This Week
- No swim practice on Thursday, July 20 this week due to Kings Dominion trip (see Betty Young for details about the trip).
- Friday practice is Fancy Breakfast! This fun tradition continues as parents put on a fancy breakfast spread for our Piranhas.
Swim Team Banquet at Glasgow Middle School
Our annual Swim Team Banquet will be held Sunday. Check your email from an Evite and please RSVP if you have not done so already.
Our banquet is a beautiful time to celebrate our swimmers with dinner and awards. All swimmers will be recognized and we will end with our banquet slideshow created by Jason Nye.
Families will need to bring their own drinks and no alcoholic beverages are allowed on school property.
A Meet Highlights
We dominated at our final A meet versus Sully Station to end the season 4-1 and secure the Division 9 Champion title! The cheers were especially loud as our final mixed age relay races came into the wall and the win was official.
Congratulations to our All Star Relay Teams!
Our four All Star Relay Teams put up a great performance at the NVSL meet held at Hamlet. We scored 79 points, which added to our total points in the Division. Here are the results:
- Our 11-12 girls free relay team placed 5th with a time of 57.41 (and a new team record!)
- Our 11-12 girls medley relay team placed 6th with a time of 1:05.02
- Our 9-10 boys free relay team placed 13th with a time of 1:07.59 (a new team record!)
- The 9-10 boys medley relay placed 16th with a time of 1:18.81
A huge thank you to Jason and Karen Corbett who went out to the pool early to set up tents, fans, chairs, coolers, and gear for our swimmers so they could stay hydrated, cool, and happy as they camped out throughout the afternoon waiting for their swims.
13 and Overs Get Fancy for Annual Progressive Dinner
Each year, our 13 and over swimmers come together for a progressive dinner and evening together. We’d like to extend a thank you to all the volunteers, led by Andrea Cordero, who made this event happen. We are especially grateful to the Cervoni Family for graciously hosting the dinner position of the evening.
Piranhas Get Crazy at Viking Dinner
Our Piranhas went wild with food and raft races at our annual Viking Dinner. A big thank you to Anna Colangelo for organizing the always rowdy, always memorable event.
See you at the B Meet Piranhas!
