Dr. Carl Stephen Smearman Scholarship
In honor of Carl, the Piranha Power Boosters Club has established a scholarship for graduating seniors of the Parklawn Piranha Swim and Dive Team. Carl exemplified what it meant to be a Piranha. He was a gifted and talented athlete and scholar, who inspired those around him through his humility, kindness and strength. He strove to be the best version of himself and encouraged others to do the same. His love of the Piranha Swim Team as a friend, teammate, and coach was evident whenever he was on the pool deck or in the water. His kind spirit is greatly missed.
Piranha Team Reps reflecting on Carl’s love for the team stated “Carl hung out with the 8 and unders - always making time for them, whether it was cheering for them on the pool deck, showing spirit at a meet, or having fun at a pep rally.”
A Piranha Swim Team Coach reflecting on Carl’s calm presence on the pool deck said: “Carl was thoughtful, inquisitive, and kind - I never heard him voice frustration or negativity towards anyone.”
A Piranha Swimmer reflecting on Carl being the ultimate Piranha role model remembered that ”He was always a friend. All of us looked up to him.”
2025 High School graduates who are currently swimming and/or diving for the Parklawn Piranha Swim and Dive Team are eligible to apply for a scholarship. To apply, submit an essay to [email protected] by 5 PM ET on Friday, July 11 responding to the following question (and in 1000 words or less):
- What has being part of the Parklawn Piranha Swim and Dive Team meant to you, and how will you apply what you have learned from being part of this community at college or other future endeavors?
The amount and number of recipients will be determined by the Scholarship Committee based on, among other factors, the number of applicants and available funding. The recipients of the scholarship will be announced at the team’s 2025 end-of-the-season banquet.
