Piranhas Weekly News - Week of 6/4
Dear Piranhas Families:
Summer is almost in full swing! Soon we’ll be cheering the team on at meets and enjoying Piranhas pep rallies.
Bear with us this week - there are several important updates as we get closer to Time Trials and move the season into full gear.
We encourage swimmers to please attend practice this Friday. Swimmers will be working on starts. And our starter, Phil Shea, will join us so swimmers can practice with the official whistle (thanks Phil!). This practice will benefit everyone, not only for the Time Trials on Saturday, but for all future swim meets.
Details for Time Trials (this Saturday!)
We are thrilled that Time Trials are just around the corner on Saturday, June 10th. Drop your swimmers off at the back gate. Parents who are volunteering should enter through the front gate and report to the sign in desk to be marked present for your job.
Make sure your swimmer is prepared! Here’s a helpful checklist (and remember to label all gear):
- team suit and cap
- goggles
- sunscreen
- two towels
- extra cap and goggles
- water bottle
- snacks
Please let the team reps know if you cannot attend.
Sign Up for B Meet vs Broyhill Crest
Swimmers’ event selections for B Meet vs Broyhill Crest are due at 3pm the day of Time Trials. It is easy to forget on a busy day like Time Trials, so mark your calendar with a reminder or get your sign ups in early (Click ‘Meet Entry’ on the team calendar). Learn about meets webpage.
Pool Partners Program
We are happy to announce the return of the Pool Partners Program! One of the best things about the Piranhas is the special friendship that develops among the swimmers. Pool Partners encourages these friendships by pairing experienced swimmers with newer ones (including Junior Piranhas). Younger swimmers get a mentor to show them how to navigate practices and meets, and to cheer them on while they swim. Older swimmers discover the joy of being a role model.
After Friday’s practice, the pairs will be announced. And to help build that camaraderie, we’ll have an ice cream social with a fun icebreaker after practice.

Cake Bake on Sunday, June 11
Our Piranhas Cake Bake is back by popular demand and set for Sunday, June 11th at 4pm! This social event brings together swimmers, divers, and Junior Piranhas to face off in competition with other age groups to showcase their decorating skills. Each group will think of a theme and then set off in fierce competition (see a peek at last year’s competition). Encourage your swimmer to come to practices with some theme ideas!
Importantly, we need a cake bake parent volunteer, which involves picking up store-bought cakes and helping coordinate the event. Email Karen if you can help.
Age Group Ambassadors Needed!
We are looking for age group ambassadors to create a positive experience for our various swim groups. This is similar to a classroom parent - keeping fellow parents informed and coordinating ideas for pep rallies and other activities.
It’s a very fun role and great way to get to know the other swimmers in your child’s age group.

Piranha-Thon
Pledges are coming in and our Piranhas are ready to make a splash! Our Piranha-thon takes place this Tuesday, June 13 during practice. Swimmers will have one hour to swim as many laps as possible and we will award special team caps, water bottles, and hats to those who swim the most laps. Please ask your family and friends to support your swimmer and our team! All the details are here.
We also need volunteers to help count laps. Watch for a sign up link coming this week.
Questions? Contact Andrea Cordero or Rebecca Cervoni.
Help Us Keep the Parklawn Neighborhood Safe
Kindly remember to follow all traffic laws when driving to the pool. We have learned that a few of our team families have been running stop signs at the Columbia and Fairfax Parkway intersection. As we tell our swimmers, you represent the team to our community, especially when you’re sporting your Piranhas team gear (including car magnets)!
Load Up Those Snack Bar Accounts
Please remember to start an account at the Piranhas snack bar so your swimmers can purchase items throughout the summer. You can also use your snack bar accounts to pay for pizza by the slice, grill nights, and concessions at home A and B meets. The accounts can be funded through cash or check made out to the swim team.
[Thank you, faithful reader, for making it this far. As a reward, the first person to reply to this email will get a $3 snack bar coupon!]
NVSLU Classes Continue
NVSLU certification classes continue with upcoming clinics on June 7, June 11, and June 13, and June 14. See the full schedule here.
Summer is the best time of the year, and we could not be more thrilled to spend it with you all. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.
See you soon!
