Piranhas Weekly News - June 21
Hi Piranhas -
Happy Father’s Day to all our Piranha dads, grandfathers, and father figures. Thank you for the countless early mornings, timers shifts, concession runs, ride-sharing duties, and enthusiastic cheering from the deck. We hope you had a wonderful day.
And what a week! Here are some highlights:
- Our B Meet against Broyhill Crest featured great swims and one of our fastest B meets yet. We ended by 8:30pm as planned! Veteran parents agree that it might be the best team record we’ve ever had! ;)
- Friday’s Boat Races were an epic display of teamwork and creativity, and our 13&Os showed great leadership. The whole Parklawn pool community gathered around to watch our Piranhas work together.
- Saturday’s A Meet against the Fairfax Frogs was memorable for more than just the swimming. The Frogs may have been the friendliest, most sportsmanlike team in the NVSL! Compliments flowed freely between both teams all morning, creating one of the most positive meet environments we can remember.
- Our 8 & Under Boys absolutely carried the day. That squad scored more points than any other age group! The future is bright, Piranhas!
- Record-breaking relay swims (check out the updated team record page!), big personal best performances across the board, and an unforgettable finish by Quade, who out touched a Fairfax swimmer by 0.01 seconds(!!) to win the 50 Free. That’s the kind of finish you remember all summer.
A huge thank-you to all of our volunteers who helped make the week a success. We couldn’t do it without you.
Here’s what’s ahead this week.
Monday: Away B Meet at Arlington Forest. Our first away B Meet of the season.
— Arrive at 5:15pm
—The theme is “Who’s That?” Come dressed as a celebrity, cartoon character, historical figure, or other recognizable character.
— See all details here
Friday: Nerf Battle Social & Grill Night. A team favorite! Come ready for an epic showdown. We will rotate age groups in 30 minute increments starting at 5:30pm.
- 8 & under 5:30-6pm
- 9/10 6-6:30pm
- 11/12 6:30-7pm
- 13 and up 7-7:30pm
If you can’t make your age group time, don’t sweat it. We’ll work your swimmer in.
All equipment is provided. You will need shoes and we recommend bug spray.
We will be using the Parklawn field so parking may be tight. Please try to carpool.
Bring your appetite, too. The Piranha Grill Night will be serving dinner.
Saturday: A Meet at Ravensworth. Our first away A Meet of the season. Let’s be as spirited and kind to the Ravens as the Frogs were to us. Meet details and lineups will be distributed by Thursday evening.
Sunday: IM Carnival. Info will go out later this week. If you have a swimmer who, after Monday’s B Meet, wants to swim the IM Carnival, message Karen.
Coaches’ Corner reminders:
- Bring your fins to practice.
- Bring your water bottle every day.
- Wacky Wednesday theme: Neon!
Mark Your Availability! The season starts moving quickly from here. Update your swimmer’s availability in SwimTopia. Every swimmer should indicate whether they are available for upcoming A Meets and Relay Carnivals. Accurate availability helps coaches build lineups and plan relays.
Volunteer Opportunities. Thank you to those who reached out to plug in and help the team. We have two specific positions we’re looking to fill:
🐠Viking Dinner Coordinator. We’re looking for a 12 & Under family, ideally one with younger swimmers, to shadow this year’s Viking Dinner organizers and eventually take over this beloved team tradition. Our current family is aging out of the program.
🐠 Donut Day Hero. We’re looking for someone willing to pick up Krispy Kreme donuts in Alexandria and bring them to practice each week. You can pick the day that works for you. Donuts need to arrive on deck by 8:00 a.m. We’re not saying the swimmers would swim faster donuts… but we’re not not saying that either. Be the hero!
Reach out to Karen to help with either.
Healthy Swimmers = Happy Team. If your swimmer is sick, keep them home. Swimmers must be fever-free and stomach-bug-free for at least 24 hours before returning to practice or meets.
Practice Reminder. During practice, the basketball courts, playgrounds, and foosball tables are not available for use. Thank you for helping us keep practices safe and focused.
See you on deck!
