Piranhas Weekly News - Week of June 9
Dear Piranha Families:
What a fantastic week we've had! Our practices were a hit and our team photo day was a success. Special thanks to Lisa Owings for organizing the Big Piranha Little Piranha kickoff. Kudos to everyone who contributed to making Time Trials a success—check out the full recap below.
Let's all do our part to respect our pool facilities and equipment. Please remind your swimmers to pitch in and help keep our team area clean.
And don't forget—make sure to get your B meet selections in by 3 PM on the Saturday prior to each B meet.
Notes about the week ahead are below.
Time Trials Recap
Congratulations to our swimmers and parents for kicking off the season with a fantastic Time Trials! Time Trials not only set benchmark times for swimmers but also remind us of the logistics necessary for running a meet smoothly. The Great Piranha made an appearance and our 15-18s took to the diving board to lead the team with our favorite PLP cheers.
A big shout-out to NVSL’s finest cookery — the Piranha Grill Team — for the savory aroma of bacon and keeping everyone well-nourished. The Sno Cone machine also made its season debut. A special cheer goes to Lucy McGrorey for grabbing the first snow cone of 2024.
The team record breaker buzzer was going nonstop. Congratulations to our team record breakers: Ezra Mancari, Alina Kinder, Charlotte Hill, CC Corbett, Emerson Mancari, and Noah Popp. An exciting start to the season!
All around, the coaches were so proud of our swimmers. They commented that all the hard work over winter really showed at Time Trials. Parents should be so proud of your athletes.

On the Schedule This Week
Monday B Meet - Broyhill Crest
Our first B meet will be tomorrow! The meet is away at Broyhill Crest (7212 Early St. Annandale, VA 22003 ) and the meet theme is 80s/Neon. Dig out your leg warmers or bright colors, and be ready to moonwalk across the pool deck. Extra points for neon Parklawn wear!
Arrive by 4:45 PM. Warm-ups are at 5 PM. See Amanda Hungerford's email for additional details.
Tuesday Piranha-thon
This endurance challenge will happen during your swimmer’s regular practice time on Tuesday—get ready for some serious stamina work! Check the Piranhas News page for additional details about the Piranha-thon.
The coaches are sweetening the deal with some fun prizes. The age group with the highest average laps will earn the privilege to turn their coach into an ice cream sundae! The top two swimmers in that age group will get to pile on the sundae toppings.
Friday Pep Rally
Our first Friday Pep Rally theme is Outdoor Games. We'll have stations and games set up in the field beside the Parklawn Pool. Age groups will compete together during the following times:
5-6 PM - 8&unders and 9-10s
6-6:45 PM - 11-12s
6:45-7:30 PM - 13-18s
We need parent volunteers to help run stations. No prep needed -- all materials and directions will be provided to you. Contact Lara Macdonald to volunteer.
Practice Notes from the Coaches
Bring your fins to practice this week. For Wacky Wednesday, the theme is School’s Out, so wear your favorite school-themed shirt.
Morning practices start on Friday—no evening practice that day. Check the website for practice times; we'll be swimming youngest to oldest in the morning sessions.
First A Meet on Saturday
Our first A Meet will be Saturday morning and the theme is Hawaiian. It's an away meet at Sleepy Hollow Bath & Racquet club, so let’s show up BIG. Plan your outfits now — leis, hula skirts, floral shirts, sunglasses and straw hats are encouraged.
You'll receive notifications Thursday night if your swimmer is swimming. If they are, please sign up to volunteer. We encourage the whole team to come out and cheer!
