Piranhas Weekly News - Week of 5/14

Dear Piranhas Families,

Throughout the swim season, we will check in with you on Sundays to provide important updates for the week. This email will share news you need to know each week to ensure you are informed and ready for an exciting and successful season.

Parklawn Swim Team Kick Off Meeting

Our virtual team kick off meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 18 and will begin at 7:15 p.m. via Zoom. We strongly encourage all parents and guardians to attend. We will share important details about the season, announce practice groups, and answer questions.

NVSL University Clinics and Certifications

With a team as large as ours, we need the help of all parents to run a successful swim meet. We especially need parents to certify to be NVSL referees, starters, and stroke and turn judges. Certification happens through NVSL University, which starts May 20th. Check out the schedule and mark your calendars.

Team Gear Is Here! Join Us for Team Outfitting Day

Get ready to rep the Piranhas! Team Outfitting Day is on Saturday, May 20th from 5-7 p.m. at Parklawn Pool. Swimmers can pick up their team shirts and caps, and any of the gear that you ordered through the team store earlier this year.

Sport Fair will be there so swimmers can try team suits and buy extra gear. Plus, Piranhas swim leadership and coaches will be there to greet the team, give high fives, and answer any questions about the season. The pool will also be open to general membership.

If you cannot attend, please arrange with a fellow Piranha to pick up your gear.

First Day of Practice

Our first day of practice will be Thursday, May 25. As a reminder, we begin the season with evening practices and switch to morning practices once school is out. Practice group times and additional practice details are on the Piranhas Website.

Swimmers’ assigned practice groups will be announced at the team kick off meeting this week.

2023 Season Calendar

The Piranhas calendar on the website is kept up-to-date with the latest details on meets, pep rallies, and social events. You can also subscribe to the calendar to automatically add dates to your Google, Apple, Outlook, Yahoo, or other calendars.

For those who prefer an at-a-glance paper version, please see the attached PDF of important dates.

Two Important Actions You Should Take This Week

  1. Mark Swimmer Availability for ‘A’ Meets. This is important information for coaches as they seed teams for A Meets throughout the season. Click “Meet Entry” on the Piranhas Calendar on the website to note your availability.
  2. Get Your Volunteer Slot for Time Trials! Parents, get your preferred volunteer position before it is filled! Click “Job Signup” for Time Trials on the Piranhas Calendar on the website.

Concussion Awareness

Concussions are serious and should be taken seriously in any sport. It is important to practice proper lane swimming, listen to coaches, and avoid goofing off to prevent injury. The NVSL has developed Concussion Awareness Programs for swimmers ages 11-18. Please review the following NVSL fact sheets based on your child’s age group.

Concussions Awareness for Athletes Ages 11-13

Concussion Awareness for Athletes Ages 14-18

We hope you find this information helpful! We look forward to starting the swim season with you. See you at the virtual team meeting on Thursday!
