Piranha News & Saturday A-Meet Entries

WE ARE 2-0 IN DIVISION 11. GREAT JOB, PIRANHAS!

Attached is the meet sheet for our away A-Meet!  Parents, tell your swimmers to race against the clock. If we reach 25 personal bests on Saturday, the team will celebrate with donuts at practice

Four FYIs FOR THIS WEEK:

1) Sign up to volunteer for Meets Running this team takes a village, and we want to recognize the families who have devoted significant time to running our meets.

  • We want to give a shout-out to 8 “Piranha Champions” families who have worked every meet this season: Thomason/Butler, Popp/Cordero, Andonegui, Crozier/Canzoneri, Eclarinal, Sobral, Galway/Harris & Snow.
  • These 12 families have worked 5 out of 6 meets: Masley, Schuerfeld, Lee, Sonn, Mancari, Hill, Rothschild, Bett, Oliphant, Boynton, Goldwater & Mesmer.
  • These 7 families have worked every home meet: Crider, Shea, Supple, Rojas, Viquez, Gutierrez & Macdonald.

Please give these families a break – step up and volunteer at our upcoming A-Meet at Sideburn Run, the IM Carnival, the Relay Carnival & our next home B-Meet. Remember the summer uniform is white on blue – wear a white shirt/top over blue shorts/pants/skirts.

2) No Sunday Stroke Clinic on July 3 & No Swim Team Practice or B-Meet on July 4.

3) A few of our social events require your help to plan, please RSVP now: 11-12, 9/10 & 8U Viking Dinner RSVP & July 8th Tie-Dye Pep Rally RSVP

4) We are strongly encouraging our families to test for COVID frequently and test before attending our larger social events, like the pep rallies, and before meets. We included our COVID guidelines below as reminder.

Away A-Meet “Red, White & Blue” on Saturday, July 2 at Rutherford Pool (4609 Marley Rd, Fairfax, VA). Warm-ups start at 8:25 AM; the meets starts at 9:00 AM. Parents, consider dropping off your swimmers before finding parking. The pool has a parking lot, plus additional street parking is available on Marley Rd. and Kristin Ln. Please be mindful of Fairfax County regulations which include not parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant and/or 10 feet of a driveway. Swimmers should seek feedback about their races from Coaches Dan, John & Gypsy who are on deck. Our team area will be on the grass and is sunny in the morning. Bring sunscreen, hats, water bottles, picnic blankets and foldable chairs!

Our meet theme is Red, White & Blue! We’re looking forward to seeing you decked out in our Piranha gear and top it off with as much red, white and blue as you can wear.

Away Todd Potts IM Carnival on Sunday July 3 at Forest Hollow Pool (https://www.foresthollow.com/.) The meet starts at 9 AM (Warm-Up TBD, but likely at around 7:50 AM). This meet is being seeded on Friday and we expect to hear which swimmers were selected from Forest Hollow by Saturday, July 2. If your swimmer swims at this event, you are expected to Volunteer. FYI - If your swimmer is 11/12 or 10U, sign up for the first shift (covering Events 1 through 4). If your swimmer is 13/14 or 15-18, sign up for the second shift (covering Events 5 through 8). Please stop by the Parklawn Pool after the IM Carnival to celebrate – the Pool will have a donut truck, Mama’s Donut Bites from 11 AM to 3 PM.

Away Division 11 Relay Carnival on Wednesday July 6 at Sideburn Run Pool. The meet starts at 6:30 PM (Warm-Up and arrival time TBD). We will publish the meet entries by July 4th. Only relay races will be held. Freestyle and medley races for each age group, plus mixed age. The number of swimmers participating in Relay Carnival is lower than an A-meet because we field one freestyle and one medley race team per age group. Even if your swimmer is not part of a relay team, please come out and support your fellow swimmers at this super fun competition. We expect all relay swimmers to attend practice on July 5-6 (unless they are a 15-18 swimmer who has a job or internship that prevents them from attending practice on these days). We want our swimmers to stay cool and indoors before the meet—please, please do not have your swimmer hang out at the pool or outside at camp after practice on Wednesday. After Relay Carnival, it is a tradition that the team celebrates with ice cream! All Parklawn Piranhas are welcome to join in some tasty ice-cream treats after the meet at Parklawn Pool. (We decided to treats this year at the comfort of our pool, rather than waiting in line and standing outside of Dairy Queen) We will send details on TeamSnap on Wednesday regarding time, which depends on when RC ends.

This is a large meet – all of the teams in Division 11 are participating, and we won this meet last year! Please remember to lock your cars and do not leave any valuables in sight. Please bring cash to support their grill and concessions – teams host these Division meets to raise money for their team. Also, this meet’s theme is Piranha Pride. Which Piranha Relay Team will bring the Most Piranha GREEN Spirit?

AND WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Together We Keep Each Other Safe and Healthy - Our Swim Team Requirements.  We are a swim team family, and we are trying to keep our entire community as safe as possible. In the past two weeks, we have seen an increase in COVID cases on our team from our youngest to our oldest swimmers. Out of respect for our coaches and teammates, we are strongly encouraging all of our swimmers (regardless of whether they have any symptoms) to take a COVID-19 test frequently and to test before attending pep rallies and meets. We will not be able to run practice or hold meets if there is a COVID outbreak among our coaching staff, our swimmers, or our parent volunteers. Please help us keep our community safe.

Parents, please take the time before you rush out of the house to make sure your swimmer is feeling okay. Keep your swimmer home if they feel sick for any reason, including having a cough, runny nose, stomach bug, sore throat, and symptoms associated with COVID-19 even if you think it is just a simple cold. This is not optional. Before your swimmer may return to practice or attend a meet, they must: (1) have had a negative COVID test immediately prior to attending practice or a meet and (2) have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours without the use of any medications (OTC or RX).

It will be okay if your swimmer misses a practice or meet because they are under the weather. But it is not okay if your swimmer comes sick to a practice or meet. That decision may result in multiple swimmers (and our coaches) becoming sick. If your swimmer arrives sick, the coaches may tell them they need to leave and not attend practice or meet.

Additional Requirements if Your Swimmer Tests Positive for COVID. If your swimmer tests positive for COVID, you must notify Karen Corbett & Nicole Molife. Your swimmer must remain home through Day 5. On Day 6, your swimmer/you: (1) have had a negative COVID test within 1 hour of attending practice/meet and (2) continue to be symptom-free for at least 24 hours without the use of any medications (OTC or RX). These individuals must wear a mask through Day 10 unless they are swimming in a meet or at practice.

Additional Requirements if Your Swimmer has had a Member of Their Household (parent, sibling or other person residing in the same household) Test Positive or had Other Close Contact Exposure. If your swimmer or you have had a COVID-exposure, but do not have any symptoms, we require that your swimmer/you: (1) test daily and have had a negative COVID test at least one hour prior to attending practice or a meet and (2) continue to be symptom-free for at least 24 hours without the use of any medications (OTC or RX). These individuals must wear a mask unless they are swimming in a meet or at practice. We are not permitting these swimmers to attend team social activities or events, such as pep rallies or other larger group gatherings.

We can’t eliminate the health risks associated with group activities as much as we wish that would be the case. There is risk in any public place where people are present. Each family and swimmer will be swimming at their own risk. Our coaches cannot prevent you or your children from becoming exposed to, contracting, or spreading COVID-19 while participating in our summer swim program, but together we can keep each other safe and healthy as possible so that we can have a fabulous summer season!

We need your help to bring on the fun. Sign-up at Pep Rally Volunteers.

Swim Fast, Piranhas! Let’s have a fantastic summer!
